when is it time to give up on a book?

I’ve heard the saying “Life is too short to read bad books” and I’ve always believed it. But how do you know when it’s time?

I’m 100 pages into The Three Weissmanns of Westport and I find myself bored. I don’t seem to care about the characters. I can’t even work up the energy to hate any of them. It’s like they are just there.

So my question is when is it time to mark the book DNF and more on?

I draw the line at annoyance. If a book just bores me, I usually keep reading, hoping for it to get better. I guess I’m just a hopeless optimist. But when the book starts to bug me, usually because of its bad writing, or because the style is too worked up to sound even remotely natural (and usually it doesn’t even make it sound pretty), then I just give up without feeling any guilt. Unfortunately, I’ve been doing this a lot lately…
